What is Penile Prosthesis Surgery?

Penile prosthesis surgery is a specialized procedure for men experiencing severe erectile dysfunction (ED) that does not respond to medications or other treatments. It involves implanting a medical-grade device inside the penis to restore the ability to achieve and maintain an erection.

Why & How It Happens?

       Common Causes for Surgery:

  • Severe erectile dysfunction unresponsive to medications

  • Peyronie’s disease with significant deformity and ED

  • Penile trauma or injury leading to erectile dysfunction

  • Post-prostatectomy or pelvic surgery-related ED

  • Certain medical conditions like diabetes affecting erectile function

        How It’s Performed:

  • Implant Selection: Choice between inflatable and malleable (semi-rigid) prostheses based on patient needs.

  • Surgical Procedure: A small incision is made to insert the prosthesis inside the penile chambers.

  • Recovery & Healing: Patients can resume normal activities within a few weeks with proper post-operative care.

  • Restoration of Function: Allows spontaneous and controlled erections, improving sexual confidence and satisfaction.

Penile prosthesis surgery offers a permanent and effective solution for men seeking to regain their sexual function and quality of life.

How Is It Done?

Penile prosthesis surgery is a minimally invasive procedure performed under anesthesia. It typically follows these steps:

1. Pre-Surgical Preparation

  • Comprehensive evaluation to determine the best type of prosthesis (inflatable or malleable).

  • Medical tests to ensure the patient is fit for surgery.

  • Pre-operative counseling to discuss expectations, risks, and recovery.

2. Surgical Procedure

  • Anesthesia: The patient is given either general or spinal anesthesia for a painless procedure.

  • Incision: A small incision is made at the base of the penis, scrotum, or lower abdomen.

  • Implant Placement: The selected prosthesis (inflatable or malleable) is inserted into the penile chambers (corpora cavernosa).

  • Reservoir & Pump (for Inflatable Type):

    • A fluid-filled reservoir is placed inside the lower abdomen.

    • A small pump is inserted in the scrotum to allow inflation and deflation.

  • Closure: The incision is carefully sutured, and a sterile dressing is applied.

3. Recovery & Post-Operative Care

  • Hospital Stay: Usually discharged within a day.

  • Healing Time: Initial recovery takes about 4-6 weeks.

  • Post-Surgery Instructions:

    • Pain management with prescribed medications.

    • Avoid strenuous activities and sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks.

    • Follow-up visits to monitor healing and device functionality.

Once healed, the penile prosthesis allows natural-feeling erections, improving sexual confidence and restoring intimacy.
